Ruhunu Kataragama

Kiri Temple

It is said that there was an ancient temple in this place in the past. AD Historians believe that this may be the temple built by Ruhuna ruler Dappula Raja Kataragama in 642. In the 16th century, during the Portuguese invasion, this temple was completely demolished and destroyed. In 1760, a Buddha statue was placed near Chandra Jotihimi Ashtapala Bodhi in Alut Deniya. The temple was enlarged and built in 1868 by Medhankara Thero of Kirinali.

This temple was renovated in 1916 by Polonmaru Vedhammadinna Jinarathana Thero. Currently, it is owned by the Kataragama Kiriwehera Raja Maha Temple. Every day, the Buddha Puja is placed here before the Deva Pooja and the group including Basnayake Nilame worships the Buddha before leaving the Perahara in this chamber.
